Development of P.E. Skills

Development of Skills Through Physical Education:

Elementary

Pre-K Thru Kindergarten
Formal Physical Education classes begin in Kindergarten. Students enjoy a varied program with rich opportunity to develop and explore all the fundamental motor skills at their own pace. Safety, fitness development, cooperation, good sportsmanship, and team spirit comprise a significant part of the program. The teacher will aim to instill in the Kindergartners the joys of movement while striving to have the students understand and apply cooperation and self-control, focus on acquiring skills, not on competition, generate creative movement solutions, and make sound choices for a lifetime of fitness development.

Grade 1
Children explore creative movement, gymnastics, ball skills, and rhythmic dance at their own pace in the first grade. The teacher will emphasize gym rules, safety regulations, team play, and good sportsmanship. Students come to understand and apply cooperation and self-control, and learn that skill mastery can be more valuable than winning. Also, teaching first graders the importance of hand-eye coordination and how vital of a component fitness is to a healthy life is instilled.

Grade 2
The aim is to teach students how to cooperate and exercise self control, learn skills correctly rather than focus on winning or losing, generate creative movement solutions, and make lifetime choices for wellness, which includes fitness development.  The curriculum will provide a diverse program that from week to week includes gymnastics, ball skills, team games, and classes in fitness and health and creative movement. Second graders improve coordination with a range of equipment and apparatus. We give them opportunity to apply their constantly improving ball skills within the context of more traditionally structured individual and team sports like soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis.

Grade 3
The third grade curriculum is diverse, encompassing ball play, team games, and creative movement classes. Grade 3 students improve their coordination and movement by using a range of equipment and apparatus. The students will have ample opportunity to apply their improving ball skills within the context of more traditionally structured individual and team sports, like soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Third graders are to cooperate and exercise self control, to learn skills correctly rather than focus on winning or losing, and to generate creative movement solutions. We stress the vital role physical fitness plays in a healthy life

Grade 4
The PE program for Grade 4 students grows more challenging while expecting a higher skill level in gymnastics, games, and exercise. Teachers expect students to devise creative solutions to movement problems and to develop a strong camaraderie—team spirit.

Middle School

Students at the 5th and 6th grade level will be given numerous opportunities to properly use equipment while being introduced to skills needed to participate in team sports.  Beginning through advanced skills will be taught and examined due to the wide variety of student experience.  Modified or lead-up activities will be played, along with a generous sampling of the real game. Lifetime activities will also be introduced.  Surrounding these experiences will be an emphasis on social skills and a fun and caring atmosphere.

Students at the 7th grade level will continue to learn and develop skills in team sports with emphasis being on skill development and game play.  Lifetime activities will be developed further.

Students at the 8th grade level will concentrate on mastery and strategy skills of lifetime activities and team sports.  Students will also be given the opportunity to develop their own fitness plan, with goal setting involved.
