ART CLASS NEWS Kindergarten through Fifth grade has been learning about the various elements of art. The elements of art are components of a work of art that can be isolated and defined. They are the building blocks used to create a work of art. Students who can identify the elements and evaluate their role in the composition of a work of art will be better able to understand an artist's choices. Line, Color, and Shape has been the focus in elementray school. Kindergarten painted their very own color wheels by mixing primary colors to create secondary colors. First grade was given step-by-step drawing lessons to help build fine-motor skills, learn shapes and practice following directions. Second grade used their knowledge of color and line to create 3D watercolor paintings. Third grade tapped into their own creativity using a mixture of lines and color to write their names. Fifth grade has started a Piet Mondrian inspired project using simple lines and primary colors. Ms. Schrader
Middle school art students have been expressively exploring art using the elements of art and the principles of design. The classes have begun their focus the first element of art, line and line patterns. They will then look at how line creates value and how value is used is used to create dimensionality. The classes then use the principles of design to create a work of art. The Principles are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural elements of a design. The students are learning that the way in which these principles are applied determines how effective their design will be at conveying the desired message and how attractive it appears. The principles are balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity. There is seldom only one correct way to apply each principle. That is why each student is urged to tap into their creativity! The students will also experiment with a variety of different media and will examine artwork from various artists by looking into the lives of these artists and discussing their motivations for creating art.
